Abstract

The development of the textile industry due to the fast fashion phenomenon increases the intensity of liquid waste containing synthetic dyes that are harmful to organisms and the environment, including Methylene Blue (MB) dye. This dye is toxic, difficult to biodegrade, and has the potential to disrupt the stability of aquatic ecosystems. One approach to treating this colored wastewater is the TiO2/ZnO-based semiconductor photocatalysis method. The performance of these materials individually is limited. This research develops a combination of both as a TiO₂/ZnO nanocomposite was developed with the addition of biochar derived from Salvinia molesta as an agent to provide a high surface area, thereby increasing the number of active adsorption sites for MB. The synthesis was carried out using coprecipitation and pyrolysis methods. This research aims to analyze the effect of varying Salvinia molesta biochar compositions on the photocatalytic effectiveness in degrading Methylene Blue.Material characterization was performed using XRD, SEM/EDX, PSA, BET, FTIR, and UV–Vis analyses, while photocatalytic activity was evaluated through MB degradation under UV irradiation. The biochar addition varied at 0, 10, 20, and 30%. The TiO₂/ZnO nanocomposite with 30% biochar exhibited the most optimal performance, achieving a Methylene Blue degradation efficiency of 99.4% within one hour of irradiation.
