Abstract

Liquid ammonia is commonly stored in large-capacity storage tanks and operated under low temperature and pressure conditions. Considering the corrosive and toxic nature of ammonia, the integrity and safety of the storage tank must be ensured through an inspection process. This inspection is required for tanks with or without a history of failure, as storage operations inherently carry the potential for damage that may lead to leakage and cause significant environmental impacts. Therefore, the inspection process can be conducted using the Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) methodology in accordance with API RP 581.To further assess the condition of the tank, a fitness-for-service evaluation and remaining life estimation are performed based on API 579. The assessment begins with the identification of potential damage mechanisms using API 571 as a reference, followed by the calculation of the probability of failure (POF) and consequence of failure (COF) in accordance with API RP 581. Based on the analysis results, the dominant damage mechanism identified is thinning. The calculated POF values are 5,646E-4 for the inner shell and 2,200E-4 for the bottom plate. The COF for the inner shell reaches 25,216.337 ft² for area-based consequences and USD18.860.531,66for financial-based consequences, while the financial-based COF for the bottom plate is USD3.195.653,38. The fitness-for-service evaluation indicates that both the inner shell and bottom plate are still classified as safe for continued operation. In addition, the remaining life of the tank components is relatively high, estimated at 126,67 years for the inner shell and 45,65 years for the bottom plate. Based on the overall risk level, which falls within the medium–high risk category, the next inspection is planned to be conducted in 2029, with inspection effectiveness levels classified as Usually Effective for the inner shell and Highly Effective for the bottom plate.
