Abstract
Spare parts availability has become a critical competitive factor in the heavy machinery industry, particularly in construction and mining sectors where equipment downtime leads to substantial operational losses. Intensifying global competition, growing buyer bargaining power, supplier dependency, and the expansion of aftermarket alternatives have shifted spare parts inventory management from a cost focused operational activity to a strategic capability. This study examines how competitive pressures influence spare parts inventory strategies by applying Porter’s Five Forces framework to the heavy machinery aftermarket. Using a qualitative and conceptual approach based exclusively on secondary data from academic literature and industry reports, the research analyzes how rivalry, buyer power, supplier power, substitutes, and new entrants shape inventory decisions related to classification, safety stock, replenishment systems, collaboration, digitalization, and supply chain innovation. The findings indicate that buyer power, industry rivalry, and supplier dependency exert the strongest influence, driving firms to prioritize service reliability, buffering strategies, and rapid replenishment capabilities. Inventory tools such as ABC, VED, and FSN classification, safety stock policies, continuous review systems, vendor managed inventory, predictive analytics, and remanufacturing programs emerge as strategic responses to competitive pressure. The study contributes by integrating competitive strategy analysis with spare parts inventory management and offers practical guidance for managers seeking to design responsive and resilient aftermarket systems that enhance service performance while controlling cost and operational risk.
