Abstract

Maritime communication technology is evolving to facilitate maritime IoT technology, which operates in various areas, ranging from onshore to offshore regions, offering services such as tourism, aquaculture, offshore oil and gas, fisheries, and climate data. AIS/VDES is a type of VHF transmission technology that supports one of the IoT communication technologies on board ships at sea. Meanwhile, IoT radio devices, including LTE, NB-IoT, RFID, LoRaWAN, Zigbee, and NFC, continue to support IoT inshore and port areas. There is great potential for utilizing AIS/VDES inshore areas, as it can be used to manage sensor and navigation data, including IoT radio devices. Integrating the IoT service communication system from land could be accomplished with the AIS/VDES BTS on the coast. Because IoT services on land near coastlines now have additional occupational coverage, whereas previously, they only covered ship operations at sea. A proper radio frequency planning strategy should consider the topography of the coastal areas and the distribution of service operation activity locations to achieve the best possible coverage.
