Abstract

Pavement rehabilitation in airport areas, particularly taxiways, requires special attention to the strength of the bond between the existing layer and the new overlay. Inadequate bonding can lead to premature distress such as cracking, raveling, and plastic deformation, which may adversely affect aircraft operational safety. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in joint configuration and the gradation of the new pavement mixture on interface strength in patching rehabilitation areas, based on the Interface Shear Strength (ISS) test induced by aircraft operations. The research methodology employs an experimental laboratory approach. Test specimens consist of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) combined with an existing layer using AC-FAA gradation, simulated using the AASHTO R30 method to represent field conditions. The new overlay layer utilizes AC-FAA, SMA-FAA, and BBA gradations. After undergoing aging, the specimens are cut to obtain flat, trapezoidal, and T-section joint configurations. The surface of the existing layer is treated with a tackcoat at a dosage of 0.35 L/m² with a curing time of 45 minutes. Fresh HMA is then placed and compacted using the Marshall hammer with 50 blows to achieve the specified Void in Mix (VIM) requirements. The specimens are subsequently tested using the Interface Shear Strength (ISS) method in accordance with AASHTO TP-114 to determine the interlayer bonding strength at patching areas. The results show that the highest Interface Shear Strength (ISS) values for the SMA-FAA and AC-BBA new layer variations were obtained using the trapezoidal joint configuration. However, for the AC-FAA new layer variation, the highest ISS value was achieved with the T-section joint configuration. These findings indicate a significant influence of joint configuration and new layer gradation on the resistance to shear forces in taxiway patching areas, as confirmed by the Two-Way ANOVA analysis with a significance value of p < 0.001. This study is expected to contribute to the development of improved technical specifications for taxiway patching works, as formal technical guidelines are currently unavailable.
