Abstract

Corrosion is one of the main problems causing material failure, particularly in marine structures operating in highly corrosive environments. A common preventive approach to slow down the corrosion rate is through surface coating methods. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of HDPE coating as a corrosion protection system for ASTM A36 steel, which is widely used in ship construction and outfitting components. The research method involved varying the thickness of HDPE powder coating applied using a spray technique followed by an oven curing process. ASTM A36 steel was cut into six specimens and coated with HDPE at predetermined thickness variations. Subsequently, all specimens were tested for adhesion strength using the pull-off test method based on ASTM D4541 and ISO 4624 standards, and their microstructures were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The test results showed that the specimen with a coating thickness of 300 microns exhibited the highest adhesion strength of 3.10 MPa. SEM analysis indicated that the HDPE coating layer was formed continuously and homogeneously, adhering well to the steel substrate without any indication of gaps or delamination. From an economic perspective, the HDPE coating system has a higher application cost compared to epoxy coatings; however, it offers a longer service life and lower maintenance requirements. Based on these results, HDPE coating is considered suitable for application as a corrosion protection system on ship outfitting components.
