Abstract

The Sunda Strait is one of the most strategic shipping lanes in Indonesia where the Merak - Bakauheni crossing route is located. The safety and efficiency of shipping activities in the Sunda Strait are greatly influenced by weather, including ocean currents. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the characteristics of ocean current patterns and analyze the relationship between ocean currents and oceanographic factors such as wind, waves, and tides. The data used include current direction and speed model data from Marine Copernicus for the period 2013-2023 which was validated using current direction and speed data from High Frequency Radar (HF Radar) with statistical methods, including Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and correlation coefficients. Data visualization and analysis were performed using software such as ArcGIS, SPSS, and Jupyter Notebook. Initial verification results between the model data and observations yielded an RMSE value of 0,26 m/s, indicating a relatively small difference, and an r value of 0,77 indicating a strong relationship between the two. Therefore, the model is considered adequate for analyzing ocean current characteristics in the study area. During the west monsoon, the current direction is persistent towards the north/northeast, entering the east monsoon, the current direction is towards the south/southwest, and during the transition season, the current direction tends to be variable. The dominant tidal influence is indicated by the Sea Level Anomaly (SLA) as the strongest predictor in both correlation (r = -0,328) and regression (Beta = -0,308) analyses. This negative relationship is highly informative, indicating that higher sea levels are associated with lower current speeds.
