Abstract

Runways are critical elements in aviation safety. The accumulation of rubber deposits caused by shear forces from aircraft wheels during landing can fill surface texture voids, leading to a reduction in skid resistance and an increased risk of Runway excursion, particularly under wet conditions. This study analyzes the effects of asphalt mixture gradation and seal coat application on macrotexture, skid resistance, and the tendency of rubber deposit accumulation on flexible Runway pavements through a laboratory study.
The study was conducted on three asphalt mixture gradations, namely FAA AC (dense graded), BBA (open graded), and FAA SMA (gap graded). Skid resistance was evaluated using the British Pendulum Tester, while macrotexture was measured using the Sand patch method. Seal coat was applied using CRS-2 asphalt emulsion. Rubber deposit accumulation was estimated through a theoretical approach by correlating changes in skid resistance with surface texture characteristics.
The results indicate that the FAA SMA (gap graded) mixture produced the highest skid resistance value (74 BPN), followed by FAA AC (dense graded) at 66 BPN and BBA (open graded) at 62 BPN. Seal coat application increased skid resistance for the dense graded mixture to 72 BPN and for the open graded mixture to 65 BPN, while the gap graded mixture remained unchanged at 74 BPN. The macrotexture (MTD) values before seal coat application were 3.29 mm for FAA SMA, 1.21 mm for FAA AC, and 1.43 mm for BBA, which changed to 2.51 mm, 1.98 mm, and 2.58 mm, respectively, after seal coat application. The estimation analysis shows a tendency toward reduced potential rubber deposit accumulation after seal coat application, particularly for the dense graded and open graded mixtures.
The scientific contribution of this study lies in the integrated analysis of mixture gradation, seal coat application, and rubber deposit estimation based on laboratory testing of Runway pavements. The findings provide practical implications for airport authorities in selecting surface gradation and preventive maintenance strategies to maintain skid resistance and enhance Runway operational safety.
