Abstract

The regional economy is strongly influenced by the quality of human development and the equitable distribution of access among the population; however, gender inequality remains an issue that has the potential to hinder economic growth. This study aims to analyze the effect of gender inequality on the economies of regencies and municipalities in Aceh Province, as measured by Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at constant prices. The data used consist of panel data from 23 regencies and municipalities over the period 2020 to 2024. Panel data regression is employed, with the selection of the most appropriate model conducted using the Chow test, Hausman test, and Lagrange Multiplier test. The results indicate that three gender inequality variables have a significant effect on the regional economy. The Gender Inequality Index (GII) has a negative effect on GRDP, indicating that higher levels of gender inequality tend to weaken regional economic growth. In contrast, the female Human Development Index (HDI) ratio and the percentage of women employed in professional occupations have a positive effect on GRDP, suggesting that improvements in women’s human development and increased female participation in professional employment can stimulate regional economic activity. The best-fitting model in this study is the Random Effect Model (REM), with a coefficient of determination of 67.9%, while the remaining 32.1% is explained by variables outside the model.
