Abstract

The development of social and emotional skills in early childhood is a crucial foundation for character formation and future social interaction. However, various factors such as parenting patterns, the influence of digital media, and limited interactions during the COVID-19 pandemic have created challenges for children in recognizing emotions and building healthy social relationships. This study aims to design a visual book as an educational medium for children’s psychology in socialization, applying a child-friendly visual communication design approach. The research methods used include literature studies, depth interviews with a licensed psychologist, a kindergarten teacher, and parent–child questionnaires, all of which form the basis for designing the story content, illustrations, and book format. Depth interview with sources working as a professional comic writer/illustrator was conducted to support the technical process of the visual book. The resulting output is a visual book with simple narration, expressive illustrations, and interactive activities that are adjusted to the cognitive and emotional development of children aged 4–8 years. Post-test results indicate that the visual book helps children recognize basic emotions, understand the importance of sharing and apologizing, and fosters empathy in social situations. Positive responses also came from teachers and parents, who considered the book effective as a supplementary medium for socio-emotional learning. This study explores visual media to serve as an engaging yet beneficial educational intervention to support children’s social and emotional development to aid them in socializing smoothly in their day to day lives.
