Abstract

Microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Spirulina platensis Chlorella vulgaris and Spirulina platensis microalgae have the potential to be used as carbon dioxide (CO₂) absorption agents indoors. However, their use is often hampered by the emergence of unpleasant odors associated with the formation of ammonia due to microalgae cell death, which is influenced by high CO₂ exposure and nutrient limitations. The addition of NPK fertilizer is expected to support microalgae survival and suppress ammonia formation. This study aims to determine the effect of NPK fertilizer concentration and variations in the ratio of C. vulgaris and S. platensis consortia on growth patterns, chlorophyll concentration, and ammonia levels in microalgae consortia cultures. The study used a completely randomized design with two factors, namely NPK concentration (0, 30, and 60 ppm) and consortium ratio (1:1, 1:2, and 2:1). The parameters observed included growth patterns, chlorophyll concentration (a, b, and total), and ammonia content using the Nessler method. Data analysis was performed using two-way ANOVA with SPSS 16 at a 95% confidence level. The results showed that variations in NPK fertilizer concentration and consortium ratio did not have a statistically significant effect (p ≥ 0.05) on chlorophyll a and b concentration or ammonia content, although descriptively there were differences between treatments. This indicates that the C. vulgaris and S. platensis consortium has good physiological adaptability in maintaining photosynthetic stability and nitrogen metabolism within the given treatment range.
