Abstract

Swallow nest cleaning is a crucial step to improve product quality. However, conventional cleaning methods may damage the nest structure and often require longer processing time. This study aimed to design and evaluate a swallow nest cleaning system using vibration, bubbling, and a combined vibration–bubbling method. Cleaning performance was assessed based on wet mass reduction and the time required for dirt to detach under three operating levels (low, mid, high) asnd different sample positions. The evaluation parameters included wet mass difference (ΔW), cleaning effectiveness (E), and dirt removal rate (R). The results showed that the combined method delivered the best overall performance, with an average E of 4.31%, an average R of 0.00425 g/s, and an average detachment time (t) of 53.42 s. The best condition was achieved at the middle position under the high level, yielding ΔW of 0.40 g, E of 8.0%, R of 0.00899 g/s, and the fastest dirt detachment time of 44.5 s. The bubbling method demonstrated moderate performance (average E of 2.80% and average R of 0.00222 g/s), while the vibration method showed the lowest performance (average E of 2.51% and average R of 0.00159 g/s), which was influenced by uneven vibration distribution. Instrument validation indicated that the thermocouple had a mean error of 1.41% (accuracy 98.59%), and the piezoelectric sensor exhibited an optimal response at 500–700 Hz with a maximum output of 2.4 Vpp. Visual inspection confirmed no structural damage to the swallow nests within the tested parameter range.
