Abstract

In the history of architecture, spatial meaning has often been constructed through symbolism, typology, and cultural narratives. In Rome, a city deeply saturated with historical and symbolic references, a non-referential architectural approach presents a critical challenge to this established paradigm. This design proposal investigates how architecture can generate meaning without reliance on symbols or historical patterns, instead emerging from intrinsic form-generative qualities and processes of sense-making in the design methodology, as articulated by Valerio Olgiati. This approach is further reinforced by the concept of antitypical architecture, which rejects fixed programmatic and typological definitions, while phenomenology is employed as a supporting instrument to understand direct spatial perception. The study formulates a conceptual design approach that prioritizes formal integrity and internal logic over symbolic representation, positioning Rome as an ideal experimental context. Through theoretical analysis and conceptual synthesis, this project aims to produce an autonomous and authentic architecture that activates imagination and perception without dependence on external references.
