Abstract

This proposal explores the role of Genius Loci theory by Christian Norberg-Schulz in architecture as a foundation for preserving the spirit and identity of place. Architecture desigm that is responsive to its natural and cultural context fosters a sense of belonging and emotional connection between individuals and their environment. Vernacular architecture, which embodies local values, has developed over centuries across Indonesia. However, the influence of modernization and globalization has led to a growing preference for architectural styles perceived as more “modern,” often at the expense of local identity. One of the most noticeable changes in modern society is the shift in lifestyle characterized by increased mobility and migration patterns, especially among the younger generation. In this context, architectural typologies such as bus terminals have become an important part of their daily lives. This proposal stems from the understanding that Genius Loci, the spirit of a place, can be used as a reminder of identity through frequently used spaces. By adapting elements of traditional houses into the design of bus terminals, this design proposal seeks to rebuild the emotional connection between the community and its cultural roots. When people stop by or pass through transit spaces, they not only experience the transportation function but are also greeted by memories of their place of origin, symbols of home, and an identity that may have begun to fade due to modernization. This proposal offers an architectural approach that positions the bus terminal as a medium for reinterpreting local identity amidst a highly mobile lifestyle.
