Abstract

The need for renewable energy continues to increase as a solution to the global energy crisis and the environmental impact of fossil fuel use. Savonius wind turbines are ideal for use at low wind speeds, but their efficiency tends to be low due to the negative torque generated by the returning blade. This study presents a two-dimensional numerical simulation using CFD (computation fluid dynamics) to analyze the influence of plate-shaped deflectors on the performance of the Savonius turbine. Variations in deflector angles (30°,45°, 60°, 75°) and deflector to turbine distance (1D, 2D, 3D) were tested to see changes in power coefficient (Cp) and torque values. The results showed that across all distance and deflector variations, there was an increase in efficiency at the 60° deflector angle variation and the 1D deflector distance was up to 75% compared to without a deflector. The deflector functions to direct the flow to the advantageous blade and block the flow to the reverse blade, thereby lowering the negative torque. Validated simulations of experimental data with errors below 5%, prove the reliability of this numerical method. This research aims to provide the potential for small-scale Savonius turbine applications in areas with low wind speeds.
