Abstract

Salinity gradient energy in Indonesia can be harnessed through Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO). This study develops a complete methodological framework to (i) map national PRO potential, (ii) screen priority locations, and (iii) assess techno-economic feasibility. First, seventy river mouths were compiled and scored using a composite ranking index based on salinity gradient, river discharge, and proximity to electrical infrastructure and settlements, resulting in a national priority site map. Second, the three highest-ranked locations were selected for detailed techno-economic assessment. Technical performance was evaluated using a numerical PRO process model reconstructed from established literature, solving mass balance for co-current flow and salt flux, as well as implicit membrane transport numerically (Brent method), followed by system energy accounting to obtain net specific energy. Economic feasibility was analyzed using these parameters capital expenditure, operational expenditure, maintenance, and discounting to produce unit cost and net present value indicators. The Sanulu case study (Sea Water–Waste Water configuration) yields a net specific energy of 0.039 kWh/m³, with total costs dominated by pretreatment and balance-of-plant components.

Energi gradien salinitas di Indonesia berpotensi dapat dimanfaatkan melalui Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO). Penelitian ini menyusun kerangka metode dari awal hingga akhir untuk (i) memetakan potensi PRO nasional, (ii) menyaring lokasi prioritas, dan (iii) menilai kelayakan teknis serta ekonominya. Pertama, 70 muara sungai dihimpun dan diberi skor menggunakan indeks komposit berbasis peringkat (gradien salinitas, debit, dan kedekatan jaringan listrik dan permukiman) sehingga dihasilkan peta potensi lokasi prioritas. Kedua, tiga lokasi dengan peringkat tertinggi dipilih untuk analisis tekno-ekonomi mendalam. Kinerja teknis dihitung menggunakan model proses PRO numerik yang direkonstruksi dari literatur rujukan, menyelesaikan neraca massa dan fluks garam serta transport membran implisit yang diselesaikan secara numerik (metode Brent), kemudian dilakukan perhitungan energi untuk memperoleh energi spesifik bersih. Kelayakan ekonomi dianalisis berdasarkan parameter Capital Expenditure, Opertaional Expenditure, pemeliharaan, dan diskonto untuk menghasilkan indikator biaya satuan dan Net Present Value. Studi kasus Sanulu (Sea Water–Waste Water) menghasilkan energi spesifik bersih sebesar 0,039 kWh/m³, dengan struktur biaya yang didominasi oleh komponen pretreatment dan balance of plant.
