Abstract

(1)“Bagaimana jika penjara kita bisa menjadi tempat rehabilitasi, bukan hanya hukuman?” (2)Populasi narapidana di Inggris telah meningkat drastis dalam dua dekade terakhir, menciptakan krisis serius berupa kepadatan berlebih dan kurangnya ruang bagi narapidana baru. Permasalahan ini tidak hanya disebabkan oleh meningkatnya angka kejahatan, tetapi juga karena model penjara saat ini yang tidak efektif. Penjara di Inggris umumnya dianggap hanya sebagai tempat kurungan dengan fokus minim terhadap reformasi atau reintegrasi sosial. Akibatnya, banyak narapidana dibebaskan lebih awal tanpa pembinaan yang memadai, sehingga berisiko melakukan kejahatan kembali. (3)Proyek ini menawarkan pendekatan arsitektur dan konsep yang lebih manusiawi terhadap penjara, dengan mengedepankan rehabilitasi daripada hukuman. Fokus utama adalah menciptakan lingkungan yang mendukung kesehatan mental, pendidikan, pengembangan keterampilan, dan koneksi sosial. Dengan perencanaan ruang yang tepat, penggunaan cahaya alami, akses ke ruang hijau, dan pemilihan material yang baik, penjara dapat menjadi tempat yang kondusif untuk perubahan positif. Melalui desain ulang ini, proyek bertujuan mengatasi akar penyebab perilaku kriminal dan mendorong reintegrasi sosial yang lebih sukses. Pendekatan ini tidak hanya berpotensi mengurangi angka residivisme, tetapi juga membantu mengatasi kepadatan populasi narapidana secara sistemik. Akhirnya, proyek ini menantang pendekatan hukuman tradisional dan menunjukkan bahwa perubahan filosofi dalam desain penjara dapat menghasilkan dampak sosial yang luas. Penjara tidak harus menjadi tempat yang suram, ia bisa menjadi ruang yang memberi harapan dan kesempatan untuk memulai kembali.

(1)"What if our prisons could be places of rehabilitation rather than punishment?” (2)With the prison population in the United Kingdom increasing drastically over the past two decades, the system faces an urgent crisis overcrowding and insufficient space for incoming inmates. The root of the issue lies not only in rising crime rates but also in the inadequacy of the current prison model. Prisons in the UK are largely seen as places of confinement with minimal focus on reform or reintegration into society. As a result, many inmates are released early to free up space, often without having received the support needed to reduce reoffending. (3)This project suggests an innovative conceptual and architectural approach to prison architecture that puts rehabilitation and compassionate circumstances ahead of punishment. This project intends to address the fundamental causes of criminal behavior and facilitate the successful reintegration of prisoners into society by redesigning prison conditions to promote mental health, education, skill development, and community connection. The design explores how access to natural light and green areas, material choices, and spatial organization may all support a more positive and healthy prison environment. In the end, the project undermines the conventional punitive approach and raises the possibility that a more compassionate, rehabilitative system could lower repeat offenses rates in addition to easing congestion. A change in architectural philosophy could turn prisons from depressing places into places of opportunity, with beneficial social effects that go well beyond the prison gates.
