Abstract

Traditional Balinese Housing (HTB) is a cosmology-based spatial system that forms a structured sacred-domestic-social hierarchy. In the context of a tourism area like Ubud, HTBs face pressures of change due to the integration of economic functions, particularly tourism. Previous studies generally interpret these changes as typological degradation or transformation that shifts the cosmological order. This approach has not fully explained how various aspects actively negotiate spatial change. This dissertation aims to examine the aspects that play a role in this spatial negotiation and the mechanisms by which these hierarchical spatial arrangements are negotiated through setting-activity relationships, occupant perceptions, and adaptive spatial transformations in contemporary HTBs.
The research employed a qualitative-interpretive approach with a case study strategy of 18 HTB units in the Ubud area (2023–2025). Data were obtained through spatial observation, spatial mapping, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation. Analysis was conducted thematically, integrating setting-activity and spatial production theories to uncover the relationships between daily practices, meanings, and spatial configurations.
The research findings demonstrate that the spatial changes in the HTB (traditional housing complex) did not occur as a replacement of the traditional order, but rather as an adaptive process negotiated through multi-layered negotiation mechanisms. The spatial hierarchy was shown to be dynamic and shaped through four main mechanisms: functional, temporal, territorial, and symbolic negotiation. Sacred space remains the primary hierarchical reference, while domestic space serves as an adaptive transition zone that absorbs commercial pressures without diminishing the essence of the sikut satak (situk satak) values. The resulting transformations resulted in a hybrid spatial configuration that maintains a cosmological orientation while accommodating economic needs.
The novelty of this research lies in the formulation of the concept of "negotiation of the hierarchical order of space" as an analytical framework for understanding the transformation of traditional housing as a mechanism of cultural resilience, rather than as a form of degradation. These findings expand the discourse on traditional housing transformation by positioning the daily practices and perceptions of residents as key to the formation of an adaptive spatial hierarchy in the context of cultural tourism.
