Abstract
Marine wealth is one of the potentials found in Indonesia, and Indonesian coastal communities take advantage of this potential as a livelihood source, fishing in the sea. Many traditional fishers still do one-day fishing, relying on coolboxes and ice cubes to maintain the freshness and nutritional value of the fish they catch because the fish will decay within 6-7 hours without handling. Cotton fiber is a natural fiber with the lowest thermal conductivity value of 0.015 W/mK and is widely available in nature. The purpose of this study was to develop an alternative insulation material from organic cotton and polyurethane and analyze the characteristics of the material, including density, tensile strength, compression, and thermal conductivity, as well as analyze the thermal performance of the coolbox using a mixture of cotton and polyurethane insulation against temperature and cooling time in the room—fish storage. The test specimen selected to be used as a mixed coolbox insulation material is specimen 2 with a ratio of 1:5.71 cotton fiber: polyurethane which has a thermal conductivity value of 0.062 W/mK. The experiment was carried out two times. The first was 30% coolbox volume with 4 kg ice cubes without fish, and the second was 40% coolbox volume with 4 kg ice cubes and 1.25 kg fish. From the two experiments, the styrofoam coolbox was better able to keep the fish temperature below 10°C for 24 hours, with the lowest temperature being 7,310303 °C, while the mixed coolbox could last below 10°C for 1170 minutes, with the lowest temperature being 8,6994 °C for 24 hours and the final temperature 11,3156 °C.
