Abstract

In reefer containers, convection is the dominant heat transfer mode; therefore, its temperature and distribution is governed by the airflow pattern. The distributed airflow is responsible for removing the heat generated not only from the walls and doors of the container caused by external heat sources, but also the heat generated by the commodity itself. As a result, commodities in this stagnant zone experience various quality declines that reduce their quality. Phase Change Material (PCM) is a material that stores thermal energy by utilizing its natural phase change phenomenon and maintains the surrounding temperature by storing large amounts of latent heat. The latent heat stored by the material will change from a solid to a liquid, or vice versa when it releases heat, not a change in temperature. This study analyzes the thermal performance of the eco-reefer container cooling system with several variations of the refrigeration system. CFD simulation was carried out to analyze the distribution of cold air and temperature distribution in the container. Based on the simulation, PCM NaCl 22% and Propylene Glycol 20% are able to replace the evaporator for 3 minutes by increasing the temperature from -20˚C to -12˚C for 22% NaCl and Propylene Glycol 20% experiencing a temperature increase from -20˚ C to -12.5˚C. The temperature of the fish load can be maintained by PCM at -20˚C for 3 minutes.
