Abstract
Bahan bakar minyak merupakan salah satu sumber energi yang paling sering digunakan pada motor bakar internal, namun bahan bakar minyak mengandung sulfur yang dalam jumlah yang tidak sedikit dan dapat menghasilkan gas SO2, kandungan sulfur yang diperbolehkan oleh MARPOL adalah 0.5% (5000 ppm). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan karakteristik bahan bakar dan performa MDO sebelum dan setelah desulfurisasi. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode adsorbsi dengan adsorben zeolite alam. Penelitian ini membandingkan 4 jenis bahan bakar berbeda yakni MDO murni, MDO + 4 gr zeolite/l, MDO + 8 gr zeolite/l, dan MDO + 12 gr zeolite/l. Dari hasil penelitian didapatkan bahwa kandungan sulfur bahan bakar MDO murni, MDO + 4 gr zeolite/l, MDO + 8 gr zeolite/l, dan MDO + 12 gr zeolite/l berturut-turut adalah 0.41%, 0.67%, 0.60%, dan 0.68% yang menandakan bahwa kandungan sulfur pada bahan bakar naik, yang disebabkan tidak adannya proses pembersihan zeolite alam, sedangkan zeolite alam mengandung kotoran didalamnya. Hasil uji performa didapatkan bahwa bahan bakar MDO murni memiliki performa bahan bakar terbaik dibandingkan bahan bakar lainnya, dengan perbedaan SFOC hingga 36% dibanding bahan bakar lainnya.

Fuel oil commonly used in internal combustion engine and one of the most used energy sources, fuel oil contains quiet big amount of sulphure which produces SO2, MARPOL allowed sulphur contents in fuel oil to 0.5% (5000 ppm). Objectives of this research is to know the effects of desulfurization to the characteristics and performance of each fuel oil types. This research compares 4 different types of fuel oil, which is pure MDO, MDO + 4 gr of zeolites/l, MDO + 8 gr of zeolites/l, and MDO + 12 gr of zeolites/l. Sulphur contents of pure MDO, MDO + 4 gr of zeolites/l, MDO + 8 gr of zeolites/l, and MDO + 3 gram of zeolite in order is 0.41%, 0.67%, 0.60%, dan 0.68% which indicates that sulphure contents went up. This happens because natural zeolites contains filth and needs to be cleaned before usage. Performance tests results shows that pure MDO has better performances compared to other, with up to 36% different in SFOC.
