Abstract

A dredger is a type of vessel that has special equipment for carrying out dredging. Most of such special components require a sufficiently large supply of electricity. Therefore, a proper and efficient configuration of electric current distribution is indispensable to support components to function optimally. In dredger, the main distribution used is AC electricity distribution which has a higher impedance value compared to DC electricity, resulting in greater distribution losses. With the large losses in the distribution system, a larger power output is also needed to balance the required power and the lost power. To reduce the impedance value on the distribution of electricity on the ship, a reconfiguration of the main electricity distribution system has been carried out from AC to DC. Due to changes made that affect the amount of short circuit current so that there is a change in the specifications of the protection equipment used, namely the circuit breaker. Short circuit is a common disturbance in the distribution of electricity in the form of excess current that appears in the electricity on the ship due to internal and external factors. In this study, the use of simulation software of electrical distribution system simulator was carried out to compare the amount of short circuit current that contributes to each type of distribution. The simulation process is carried out on each bus in the four main conditions of the ship, namely seagoing, maneuvering, dredging, and at port. The simulation results have been analyzed to compare which one is better used as the main electrical distribution between AC and DC electricity. In this study, it was obtained under each condition that the average value of the short circuit current decreased significantly. In dredging conditions where most equipment operates, there is a decrease of up to 85.12% using Caterpillar generators from those before reconfiguration worth 5.421 kA while after reconfiguration worth 0.807 kA. The biggest drop occurred in at-port conditions with a decrease of up to 93.11% using Caterpillar generators from those before the reconfiguration of 4,215 kA. With a decrease in the value of the short circuit current that occurs, it is expected to provide benefits, namely reducing the risk of damage that occurs due to too large a current value and increasing the reliability of the distribution cable.
