Abstract

We can find corrosion that occurs in various types of metal, one type of corrosion that causes losses is cavitation corrosion. Cavitation is a special form of erosional corrosion caused by the formation and bursting of vapor bubbles on a metal surface. Cavitation corrosion is caused by the formation of water bubbles in the pipe due to pressure differences. Many things can cause cavitation such as the magnitude of the pressure drop and the drop in pressure reaching the vapor pressure. This research makes a 3-dimensional flow simulation on the control valve using a ball valve and flowing with caustic soda-type fluid with 4 variations in the percentage of valve openings, namely 30%, 50%, 70%, and 100%. The cavitation area is found which is shown in the pressure distribution contour and flow velocity, while the cavitation examination is calculated by theoretical calculations. The results of the research are recommendations or suggestions regarding actions to be taken if the control valve is exposed to cavitation, namely by adding an orifice plate instrument. The addition of an orifice plate is suitable for reducing the pressure and fluid flow velocity. At the inlet pressure of 65 psi, the addition of the orifice has only a slight effect on reducing the intensity of cavitation. At 30% and 50% openings there is a change in the contour from dark blue with a value between 0.000568 – 0.101 to light blue with a value of 0.201 – 0.401, as well as an expansion of the green contour with a value between 0.501 – 0.601 which indicates that a slight phase change occurred. Meanwhile, at 70% aperture, the cavitation contour is reduced, but the cavitation contour moves into the ball sheet.
