Abstract

Zeolite NaY and Al-MCM-41 have been successfully synthesized from Bangka kaolin as the main source of silica and alumina. Zeolite NaY was synthesized by a single-stage hydrothermal method, while Al-MCM-41 was synthesized by a two-stage hydrothermal method with CTABr as a mesoporous structure agent. The acidity of zeolite NaY and Al-MCM-41 was increased by a cation exchange step to become zeolite HY and H-Al-MCM-41. Al-MCM-41 was modified by wet impregnation method using H2SO4 solution become SO4/Al-MCM-41. The XRD characterization of zeolite NaY showed a crystalline phase, while Al-MCM-41 and SO4/Al-MCM-4 showed an amorphous phases. The results of the FTIR characterization showed the appropriate vibrations for the zeolite NaY, Al-MCM-41 and SO4/Al-MCM-41. SEM characterization showed the morphology of zeolite NaY in the form of beams with agglomeration, Al-MCM-41 in the form of rod shape with irregular edges, while SO4/Al-MCM-41 in the form of irregular shape and there was dominance of agglomeration. All synthesized were applied as acid catalysts in the esterification reaction of pyrolysis oil from WCO. The results of reaction showed that the conversion acid value using zeolite HY, H-Al-MCM-41, SO4/Al-MCM-41 and H2SO4 respectively, was 34.13%, 41.25%, 94.10%, and 97.82%. SO4/Al-MCM-41 showed the highest catalytic activity, almost close to the catalytic activity of H2SO4. The best conversion of acid value using SO4/Al-MCM-41 catalyst was 95.89%. It was obtained with catalyst amount of 4% weight to pyrolysis oil from WCO. The acid value was reduced from 154.73 mgKOH/g to 6.35 mgKOH/g.
