Abstract

Dalam penelitian ini, dilakukan rancang bangun sebuah sensor untuk mendeteksi kadar etanol dalam bir jahe dan air berbasis serat optik plastik taper. Struktur sensing-probe yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah serat optic plastic yang ditaper dan dilapisi dengan polyvinylalcohol (pva). Struktur taper dipilih untuk memperoleh sensitivitas yang tinggi. Pengujian performansi sensor dilakukan dengan mengukur daya keluaran sensor akibat adanya pengaruh dari parameter panjang daerah taper dan konsentrasi alkohol yang digunakan. Cahaya merah (650 nm) ditransmisikan melalui fiber optik tapper yang medium cladding-nya telah dimodifikasi oleh variasi kadar alkohol dan dilapisi dengan PVA. Adanya variasi kadar alkohol menyebabkan karakteristik daya yang ditransmisikan berubah. Dari hasil pengujian sensor, diperoleh hasil bahwa sensor fiber optik plastic taper yang dilapisi PVA dengan panjang taper 5 cm memiliki kinerja yang terbaik ditinjau dari linearitas dan sensitivitas yang tinggi yaitu 0,961 dan 5.34 dBm/% secara berurutan.

In this research, a sensor was designed to detect the ethanol content in ginger beer and water based on tapered optical fiber. The structure of the sensing-probe used in this research is a plastic optical fiber that is tapered and coated with polyvinylalcohol (PVA). The taper structure was chosen to obtain high sensitivity. Polyvinyl Alcohol was chosen because of its ability to attract ethanol so it keep closed to the sensor’s sensing area. Sensor performance testing is done by measuring the sensor output power due to the influence of the parameters of the length of the taper area and the concentration of alcohol used. Red light (650 nm) was transmitted through an optical fiber tapper whose cladding medium had been modified by varying alcohol content and coated with PVA. The variation in alcohol content causes the characteristics of the transmitted power to change. From the sensor test results, it was found that the plastic taper fiber optic sensor coated with PVA with a taper length of 5 cm had the best performance in terms of linearity and high sensitivity, namely 0.961 and 5.34 dBm/%, respectively.
