Abstract

Floods are generally caused by high intensity and rainfall which results in overflow of permanent water bodies or drainage due to the amount of water that exceeds the capacity of the water supporting media. In August and September 2021 there was an increase in the intensity and rainfall which resulted in the overflow of the Katingan River resulting in a series of floods in Katingan Regency. To identify the flood distribution, remote sensing technology can be used, namely Sentinel-1 SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data. This study aims to identify the distribution area of flood inundation and to monitor changes in flood distribution in 2021 in Katingan Regency by analyzing Sentinel-1 images of VH and VV polarization before a flood occurs (archive image) and during a flood (crisis image). From the processing results, the Sentinel-1 image with VH polarization displays land area distinctions, permanent water bodies, and identification of flood inundation distribution areas better than VV polarization. Visually, it can be observed that there is a change in the distribution of floods in the research area, where the images on August 29, September 10, October 4, November 9, and November 21, 2021, show a wider flood distribution than the images on September 22, October 16, and October 28, 2021. The validation between the results of processing the flood distribution area and the data from the Pusdalops BNPB obtains matching information about the time and location of flood events in 3 of 8 images (acquisitions on September 10, November 9 and November 21, 2021).
