Abstract

The Kopi Ethek tradition in Pijeran Village, Siman District, Ponorogo Regency, is a practice of selling coffee around paddy fields using a barter system exchanging coffee for unhusked rice, passed down through generations. This study aims to understand the role of the Kopi Ethek tradition as a socio-economic barter strategy in meeting the daily needs of the Pijeran Village community, and to examine the efforts of the village government in supporting its preservation and development. The research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations during the main harvest season, and documentation, involving Kopi Ethek traders, farmers, farm laborers, village officials, long-time residents, and village administrative staff as informants. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model by Miles and Huberman, comprising data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the Kopi Ethek tradition serves as an alternative economic mechanism enabling the community to meet daily consumption needs without relying on cash, particularly during harvest season. The coffee-gabah barter system developed from the seasonal nature of farmers' income and the strong social values of trust and solidarity among community members. Beyond its economic function, the tradition also strengthens social bonds through regular interactions in the rice fields, fosters a sense of togetherness, and forms part of the local cultural identity of the agrarian community. The village government's efforts to support the preservation of Kopi Ethek have so far been limited to recognition and involvement of traders in village activities, without systematic policies or conservation programs. Nevertheless, there is potential to develop Kopi Ethek as community-based cultural tourism, provided that such development maintains the authenticity of the tradition and positions the local community as the primary actor, ensuring that its embedded social and cultural values are not eroded by commercialization. This opportunity can be realized through the support of the village government and local institutions in establishing business groups for Kopi Ethek vendors, as well as by developing cultural tourism packages that position farmers and vendors as the primary guides and key actors. In this way, the development of Kopi Ethek not only expands its economic benefits but also strengthens the agrarian cultural identity of Pijeran Village in a sustainable manner.
