Abstract

Magang industri dilaksanakan di PT. Steel Pipe Industry of Indonesia Tbk. First In First Out (FIFO).

his industrial internship was conducted at PT Steel Pipe Industry of Indonesia Tbk. (PT SPINDO) Unit 6 in the Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) Department from January to May 2025. The internship aimed to understand the steel pipe manufacturing process, quality control procedures, and to analyze the effect of zinc coating thickness on the occurrence of white rust in Galvanized Iron (GI) pipes. The study employed field observations, literature reviews, interviews with company personnel, and analysis of testing data obtained during the internship. White rust is a form of corrosion that develops on galvanized steel surfaces due to the reaction between the zinc coating and moisture, particularly under conditions of high humidity and inadequate air circulation during storage or transportation. The zinc coating thickness was evaluated using the indirect testing method specified in JIS H 0401, which determines coating mass by measuring the weight loss after dissolving the galvanized layer with hydrochloric acid. The test results indicated a zinc coating mass of 111 g/m² for the tested specimen. The analysis demonstrated that thicker zinc coatings provide greater corrosion resistance, thereby reducing the likelihood of white rust formation. In addition to coating thickness, environmental humidity, poor ventilation, and mechanical damage to the zinc layer were identified as significant factors contributing to the occurrence of white rust. To minimize the formation of white rust, PT SPINDO Unit 6 implements several preventive measures, including immersion of galvanized pipes in Rust Preventive Oil (RPO), storage in dry and well-ventilated environments, periodic inspections using a sampling method, and the application of the First In, First Out (FIFO) inventory system. Based on the internship observations, white rust affects only the zinc coating and does not reduce the mechanical strength of the base material. Therefore, maintaining an adequate zinc coating thickness and implementing proper storage procedures are essential to ensuring the quality, durability, and corrosion resistance of Galvanized Iron pipes.
