Abstract
For decades oil and gas companies have been conducting projects in all frontiers in Indonesia; onshore, offshore and subsea. Hundreds of platforms have been built and operated since 1970s which all are built by EPC contractors. Considering high risks involved in those projects, EPC contractors have been implementing risk management to ensure business sustainability, protecting human life and customer satisfactions. To what extent and how they are doing it are interesting to be found out. To measure it literature suggests the “risk management maturity level” tool. Though many maturity models have been proposed since 1997, it is hard to find the suitable model for the intended population. A new model needed for this study which should be developed based on the best risk management standard that also need to be selected properly. Once model is developed, a set of questionnaire embedded into online surveying software would be necessary for fast and easy filling by respondents. Data analysis, interview and observations would then performed accordingly. EPC Contractors aware risk factors should not be handled “informally”, but need proper risk management system. Many respondents have achieved “managed” level which shown significant use of industry risk management best practices. Few are in “aspirational” level, which shown that risk culture has been established and sophisticated tools are used in their system. Oil companies who are owner/field operator obviously having higher risk maturity level, which in return influencing their contractors and the construction industry as well, to perform better project risk management. Also, strong leadership is found to be main driver for successfull implementation or risk management in contractor organization.
