Abstract

Coal mining is a strategic sector that requires high efficiency at every stage of the production process. One of the critical stages is the coal crushing process using a feeder breaker. The performance of this equipment is strongly influenced by the condition of the teeth component, which is subjected to compressive, shear, and impact loads. Therefore, the material must possess a hard surface to resist wear while maintaining a tough core to prevent fracture. Currently, the teeth component is made of DIN 90CrSi5 alloy steel; however, this material has limitations in terms of cost and availability. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) energizer variations on the hardness and microstructure of AISI 1040 steel processed through pack carburizing and modified martempering as an alternative material for feeder breaker teeth components. The study used AISI 1040 steel subjected to pack carburizing at 900°C for 180 minutes with CaCO₃ variations of 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%, followed by modified martempering at 185°C for 35 minutes and tempering at 200°C for 40 minutes. The tests included Rockwell C hardness (HRC), optical microstructure observation, and phase fraction analysis using ImageJ software. The results indicate that CaCO₃ variation significantly affects the hardness and microstructure of AISI 1040 steel. Hardness increased from 49.0 HRC at 10% CaCO₃ to 57.6 HRC at 20% CaCO₃, then decreased at 25% and 30% CaCO₃. The microstructure was predominantly composed of martensite and retained austenite. The 20% CaCO₃ variation produced the optimum condition, containing 90.57% martensite and 9.43% retained austenite, resulting in the highest hardness value. Compared with DIN 90CrSi5 steel, which has a hardness of 48 HRC, the treated AISI 1040 steel demonstrates strong potential as an alternative material for feeder breaker teeth components.
