Abstract

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a strategic technology that supports the transition toward low-carbon energy through the capture, transportation, and storage of carbon dioxide (CO₂). One of the key aspects in CCS implementation is the availability of a CO₂ transportation system that is reliable, safe, and economically feasible. This internship report discusses the design of a CO₂ transportation system through two approaches: the repurposing of existing natural gas pipelines and the construction of new pipelines based on BS ISO 27913 standards. The study was conducted during an internship at the New Venture Division of PT Pertamina Gas using literature review, technical pipeline data analysis, material evaluation, and assessment of potential corrosion risks and CO₂ operating pressure. The analysis focuses on the feasibility of utilizing existing natural gas pipelines, particularly the Porong–Grati pipeline route, and compares it with the option of constructing new pipelines for supercritical CO₂ transportation. The results indicate that repurposing existing pipelines has the potential to be a more efficient option in terms of cost and implementation time. However, it still requires pipeline integrity assessment, internal protection, corrosion monitoring, and compliance with applicable technical standards. Meanwhile, new pipeline construction offers greater flexibility in design and material selection, but requires higher investment. Therefore, a CO₂ transportation system must be designed comprehensively by considering CO₂ fluid characteristics, material resistance, operational safety, and economic efficiency to support the sustainable implementation of CCS.
