Abstract

The digitalization of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the retail sector is frequently hindered by the misalignment between application design and users’ operational realities. MSME operators work under high situational impairment conditions, rendering touch-based Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) suboptimal. This research develops a Voice User Interface (VUI) plugin artifact integrated into an existing stock management application using a Grey-Box approach and Event-Driven communication pattern. Adopting the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology, this study formulates five meta-requirements and five prescriptive design principles encompassing deterministic mapping, real-time visual feedback, screen context synchronization, non-invasive integration, and on-device processing. The artifact leverages Android Accessibility Service and a local regex-based NLP engine to process voice commands on-device. Evaluation was conducted in two phases: controlled testing (5 tech-literate participants) and field evaluation (5 MSME operators). Usability testing results to evaluate the success of VUI intervention compared to GUI show that in the context of MSME users with low digital literacy, VUI improved task completion efficiency by 61.15% (mean GUI 56.50 seconds vs. VUI 21.95 seconds) with a Task Success Rate of 100%. SUS scores indicated equivalent perceived usability between GUI (86.0) and VUI (85.0), both categorized as Excellent. Cross-phase comparison revealed that VUI functions as an accessibility equalizer: the greatest efficiency gains were achieved by users with limited digital literacy.
