Abstract

In game design, one of the key challenges faced by developers is determining an appropriate difficulty level that accommodates players with varying skill levels. To address this issue, Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment (DDA) has been introduced to help maintain players in a state of flow. However, one challenge associated with DDA is the lack of modular strategies that can be applied across different game mechanics. Furthermore, player modeling techniques and the application of DDA in more complex game genres remain areas that require further exploration. Meanwhile, adaptive boss fights represent another game design topic that has received relatively limited attention. This research aims to develop a three-dimensional (3D) roguelike game featuring a MAPE-K-based Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment system and adaptive boss fights. The evaluation was conducted through functional testing and playtesting using a between-subjects design with two scenarios: a baseline scenario and a DDA + adaptive boss scenario. The results show that the MAPE-K loop-based DDA system was successfully implemented and functioned as intended. Compared to the baseline scenario, the DDA + adaptive boss scenario increased the average player performance from 0.746 to 0.808, the progress rate from 65.808% to 80.051%, and the win rate from 0.469 to 0.600. However, these improvements were not accompanied by a proportionate increase in subjective measures such as player satisfaction, where the baseline scenario achieved a score of 4.467, while the DDA + adaptive boss scenario achieved a score of 4.556.
