Abstract

Program magang merupakan salah satu bentuk implementasi pembelajaran berbasis praktik yang bertujuan menghubungkan kompetensi akademik dengan kebutuhan industri. Kegiatan magang ini dilaksanakan di Departemen Produksi II A PT Petrokimia Gresik, perusahaan pupuk terlengkap di Indonesia yang memproduksi berbagai jenis pupuk berbasis nitrogen (N), fosfor (P), dan kalium (K). Selama pelaksanaan magang, dilakukan pengamatan terhadap proses produksi pupuk NPK Phonska mulai dari persiapan bahan baku, proses reaksi pada Pre-Neutralizer Tank, granulasi, pengeringan, penyaringan (screening), pendinginan, pelapisan (coating), hingga pengemasan. Selain itu, dilakukan pembelajaran mengenai sistem utilitas, pengendalian mutu, pengelolaan limbah, keselamatan kerja, serta analisis risiko menggunakan metode Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP). Sebagai studi kasus (trouble shooting), dilakukan analisis efektivitas dua tipe screening yang digunakan pada proses pemisahan granul pupuk NPK, yaitu Flywheel Type dan JH Type. Evaluasi dilakukan menggunakan simulasi perangkat lunak Aspen Plus dengan membandingkan distribusi ukuran partikel (Particle Size Distribution/PSD) yang dihasilkan masing-masing tipe screening. Parameter yang dianalisis meliputi distribusi fraksi undersize, onsize, dan oversize sebagai indikator efektivitas pemisahan butiran pupuk. Hasil simulasi menunjukkan bahwa Flywheel Type menghasilkan distribusi ukuran partikel yang lebih stabil dan konsisten dibandingkan JH Type. Kurva PSD Flywheel Type memiliki sebaran data yang lebih mendekati kurva distribusi kontinu sehingga mampu memisahkan fraksi undersize, onsize, dan oversize dengan lebih baik. Kondisi tersebut berpotensi meningkatkan kualitas granul pupuk, mengurangi beban kerja crusher, menekan jumlah material recycle, serta meningkatkan efisiensi proses produksi secara keseluruhan. Sebaliknya, JH Type menunjukkan penyebaran data yang lebih bervariasi sehingga efektivitas pemisahan partikel relatif lebih rendah. Secara keseluruhan, kegiatan magang memberikan pengalaman praktis mengenai penerapan ilmu teknik kimia dalam industri pupuk, mulai dari proses produksi, utilitas, pengendalian mutu, hingga aspek keselamatan dan lingkungan. Hasil studi menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan Flywheel Type lebih direkomendasikan sebagai sistem screening pada Departemen Produksi II A PT Petrokimia Gresik karena mampu menghasilkan distribusi ukuran partikel yang lebih seragam dan mendukung peningkatan efisiensi proses produksi.

The internship program is a form of practice-based learning designed to bridge academic competencies with industrial requirements. This internship was conducted at the Production Department II A of PT Petrokimia Gresik, Indonesia's largest integrated fertilizer manufacturer producing various nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K)-based fertilizers. During the internship, observations were carried out on the production process of NPK Phonska fertilizer, including raw material preparation, the reaction process in the Pre-Neutralizer Tank, granulation, drying, screening, cooling, coating, and packaging. In addition, the internship provided learning opportunities related to utility systems, quality control, waste management, occupational health and safety, and risk assessment using the Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) method. As a troubleshooting case study, the effectiveness of two screening systems used in the NPK fertilizer production process, namely the Flywheel Type and the JH Type, was evaluated. The analysis was performed using Aspen Plus simulation software by comparing the Particle Size Distribution (PSD) produced by each screening type. The evaluated parameters included the distribution of undersize, on-size, and oversize fractions as indicators of particle separation performance. The simulation results indicated that the Flywheel Type produced a more stable and consistent particle size distribution than the JH Type. The PSD curve of the Flywheel Type exhibited a smoother and more continuous distribution, enabling more effective separation of undersize, on-size, and oversize particles. This performance has the potential to improve fertilizer granule quality, reduce the workload of the crusher, minimize the amount of recycled material, and enhance the overall efficiency of the production process. In contrast, the JH Type showed greater variability in particle size distribution, resulting in lower separation efficiency. Overall, the internship provided valuable practical experience in applying chemical engineering principles to the fertilizer industry, encompassing production processes, utility systems, quality control, occupational safety, and environmental management. The findings suggest that the Flywheel Type is a more suitable screening system for Production Department II A at PT Petrokimia Gresik, as it produces a more uniform particle size distribution and supports improved production efficiency.
