Abstract

The dolomite rock drying process in the Vertical Roll Mill (VRM) at PT Magnesium Gosari Internasional requires a significant amount of thermal energy, making control of the operating temperature a critical factor in determining process efficiency. Actual operating conditions indicate that energy use is not yet optimal, resulting in high wood fuel consumption. This study aims to determine the optimal hot air inlet temperature that can improve the thermal efficiency of the drying process without compromising product quality. The analysis was conducted using mass balance and energy balance approaches, calculations of drying energy requirements, and thermal efficiency assessments based on the company’s actual operating data. The results indicate that the optimal hot air inlet temperature is 220°C, which is lower than the current operating temperature of 288°C. Under these conditions, a thermal efficiency of 99.85% was achieved, with a heat loss of 0.15%. Temperature optimization also reduced firewood consumption from 48 metric tons/day to 25.61 metric tons/day a 46.66% decrease and lowered firewood procurement costs from Rp540,000,000/month to Rp315,000,000/month, representing a 41.66% reduction. The research results show that optimizing the operating temperature of the VRM drying system can improve energy efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and operating costs, and maintain product quality in accordance with company standards.
