Abstract

The increasing use of inverter-based renewable energy generation has created new challenges in maintaining the transient stability of power systems. One method developed to address this issue is the Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG), which is designed to emulate the operating behavior of conventional synchronous generators through a control system. However, under severe disturbance conditions, VSG-based systems still have limitations in maintaining transient stability. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of integrating Capacitive Energy Storage (CES) on the transient stability of a VSG-based system. The study was conducted on a Single Machine system under three-phase and two-phase short-circuit fault scenarios. Transient stability was evaluated based on Critical Clearing Time (CCT) and rotor angle response as the main parameters, while voltage, current, active power, and reactive power responses were used as supporting parameters. The simulation results show that the integration of CES increases the CCT value and improves the rotor angle response. In addition, the voltage, current, active power, and reactive power responses become more stable compared to the system without CES. These results indicate that the integration of CES into a VSG-based system is effective in improving transient stability.
