Abstract

The East Coast of Surabaya is a coastal area characterized by complex hydrodynamic and sedimentation dynamics resulting from the interaction between natural processes and anthropogenic interventions. Sedimentation in this area has the potential to cause navigation channel siltation; however, the accumulated sediment may also be utilized as reclamation material. This study aims to analyze the integration of navigation channel design and the beneficial use of marine sediment through numerical sediment transport modelling. The methodology involved the processing of hydro-oceanographic, bathymetric, and sediment data, followed by numerical modelling using Delft3D under three scenarios: existing conditions, post-reclamation conditions, and post-dredging conditions including sediment dredging and navigation channel development. The validation results indicate that the model provides a reasonably representative simulation of field conditions, with an RMSE of 0.19 m for tidal elevation, 0.14 m/s for current velocity, and 0.10 m for significant wave height. The navigation channel was designed with a total length of 40,918.70 m, a width of 150 m, a depth of -14 m relative to LWS, and a side slope of 1:4, resulting in an estimated dredging volume of 53,692,484.34 m³. The reclamation material requirement was estimated at 65,314,343.14 m³, while the total material obtained from navigation channel dredging and sediment utilization reached 70,126,678.54 m³. Morphological interventions, including reclamation, sediment dredging, and navigation channel development, modified the current distribution and increased current velocities within the navigation channel area. During the rising tide phase in the east monsoon, current velocity increased to approximately 0.60-0.70 m/s, while during the west monsoon, local current acceleration reached approximately 0.50-0.60 m/s. These changes in current concentration influenced the spatial distribution of erosion and sedimentation. Over a five year period, sedimentation within the navigation channel was predicted to occur locally within a range of 0.11-0.96 m, indicating the need for maintenance dredging within this time frame.
