Abstract

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the craft subsector play a strategic role in Indonesia’s creative economy; however, their export contribution remains limited at14.4%, reflecting a persistent gap between resource potential and organizational capability. This study examines an integrative structural model explaining the influence of Technology–Organization–Environment (TOE) readiness, organizational ambidexterity/ kelincahan , and organizational resilience on product innovation performance and its implications for the competitive advantage of craft SMEs in East Kalimantan. The novelty of this study rests on three dimensions: (1) the simultaneous integration of three theoretical perspectives—Resource-Based View (RBV), Dynamic Capability Theory (DCT), and Innovation-Based View (IBV)—into a single structural model not previously attempted in the craft SME context; (2) empirical testing of innovation performance as a mediator between dynamic capabilities and competitive advantage; and (3) the development of a dynamic capability-based information system design as a directly implementable operational output. This study employed a quantitative approach through a survey of 200 craft SME owners in East Kalimantan, with data analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLSSEM). The findings reveal that organizational ambidexterity/ kelincahan is the most dominant predictor of both innovation performance and competitive advantage (direct effect = 0.215). TOE readiness exerts a significant direct effect on innovation performance (0.314), yet its influence on competitive advantage is fully mediated by innovation performance. Organizational resilience contributes a direct effect of 0.085 and an indirect effect of 0.185 on competitive advantage through the same mediating pathway. These results demonstrate that competitive advantage among craft SMEs does not arise directly from resource possession, but rather through a structured chain of capability transformation. Strengthening organizational ambidexterity/ kelincahan and product innovation capacity therefore constitutes a strategic priority for building the sustainable competitiveness of craft SMEs.
