Abstract

Steel powder waste generated from the laser cutting process has the potential to be reused as a raw material through powder metallurgy, supporting the implementation of a circular economy in the manufacturing industry. One of the factors affecting the quality of sintered products is the type of binder used, as it plays an important role in forming the initial bonding between powder particles before sintering. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different binder types on the density, porosity, and hardness of sintered steel laser cutting waste powder and to determine the optimum binder based on the obtained material characteristics. Steel laser cutting waste powder (ST41) was mixed with three binder variations: 2% Stearic Acid, 2% Gummi Arabisch, and 2% Zinc Stearate. The powder was sieved using a 100-mesh test sieve, analyzed for chemical composition using XRF, compacted at a pressure of 400 MPa, and sintered at 1100°C with a holding time of 30 minutes at both 300°C and 1100°C. Material characterization included density measurement, porosity analysis using a Digital Microscope supported by ImageJ software, and Rockwell A hardness testing. The results indicate that binder variation affects the characteristics of the sintered specimens. The 2% Zinc Stearate binder produced the highest density of 4.72 g/cm³, the lowest porosity, and the highest average hardness of 35.9 HRA compared with the other binder variations. Statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA showed that binder variation had a significant effect on porosity and hardness, while no significant effect was observed on density. Therefore, 2% Zinc Stearate was identified as the most suitable binder for improving the properties of sintered steel laser cutting waste powder.
