Abstract

The increasing demand for energy and the continued reliance on fossil-fuel-based industries have contributed significantly to the rise of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, particularly from coal-fired power plants. One promising approach to mitigating these emissions is through Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU), which converts CO2 containing flue gas into value-added products. Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) is a high-value calcium carbonate product widely utilized as a filler and coating pigment in the paper, plastics, paint, pharmaceutical, and construction materials industries. This study presents the design of a PCC plant employing a carbonation process integrated with the utilization of CO2 from the flue gas emissions of the Tanjung Awar-Awar coal-fired power plant in Tuban, East Java. The plant is designed with a production capacity of 40,000 metric tons per year using calcium oxide (CaO), process water, and flue gas as the primary raw materials. At the proposed capacity, the plant is estimated to utilize approximately 17,600 metric tons of CO2 annually for PCC production. Mass and energy balance calculations indicate that the plant is capable of producing 5,066.4590 kg/h of PCC that meets the required product specifications and market quality standards. Economic analysis shows that the proposed plant has a Net Present Value (NPV) of Rp Rp 228.587.773.230 with an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 17,77%, a Pay Out Time (POT) of 5,15 years, and a Break Even Point (BEP) of 40,65%, indicating favorable economic feasibility. Therefore, the proposed PCC plant is considered technically feasible, economically profitable, and environmentally beneficial due to its contribution to reducing industrial CO2 emissions through flue gas utilization.
