Abstract

The Inward Battered Guide Structure (IBGS) is an innovative support structure for offshore wind turbines characterized by inward-inclined legs with a specific twist angle configuration. Although this structural concept offers advantages in terms of construction and material efficiency, studies investigating the effect of twist angle variation on structural reliability remain limited. This study aims to evaluate the structural integrity and reliability of IBGS with twist angles of 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° under operational conditions in the Selayar Islands waters, South Sulawesi. The analysis was conducted by simulating the response of the NREL 5 MW wind turbine using OpenFAST and applying the resulting loads to the IBGS structural model in SACS through in-place static analysis. To accelerate the reliability assessment, a surrogate model based on Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was developed, followed by Monte Carlo simulations considering uncertainties in wind speed and material yield strength. The results indicate that all structural configurations satisfy the structural integrity criteria under operational conditions, with the highest unity check value of 0.455 and different critical members for each configuration. The corresponding reliability probabilities for TJ0, TJ30, TJ60, and TJ90 are 99.85%, 99.79%, 99.60%, and 99.22%, respectively, while the corresponding reliability indices are 2.995, 2.864, 3.073, and 2.420. The findings indicate that variations in twist angle influence the structural integrity, critical member location, and reliability level of the IBGS.
