Abstract

Surabaya, as the capital city of East Java Province and a major regional economic center, is characterized by relatively high seismic vulnerability. Geologically, the city is underlain by young alluvial deposits and lies within the influence zone of two active Kendeng Fault segments capable of generating earthquakes up to magnitude 6.5. The prevalence of soft soil conditions across the city creates considerable potential for seismic wave amplification, underscoring the critical need for a thorough understanding of subsurface characteristics as a foundation for disaster mitigation. This study aims to map the spatial distribution of shear wave velocity (Vs) and classify site conditions across East Surabaya through the application of the Spatial Autocorrelation (SPAC) method with an L-array configuration. Data acquisition was conducted at 20 measurement sites using six geophones arranged in an L-shaped configuration with a 5-meter inter-sensor spacing and a 30-minute continuous recording duration per site using a MAE ST6 portable seismograph. The acquired microtremor data were subsequently processed using Geopsy for SPAC analysis, Spac2Disp for dispersion curve extraction, and HVInv for Monte Carlo inversion to derive subsurface shear wave velocity (Vs) models. Dispersion curves obtained from all 20 sites span a frequency range of 1.77–6.68 Hz with phase velocities ranging from 81.18 to 254.49 m/s. All curves exhibit a decreasing phase velocity trend with increasing frequency, consistent with the typical dispersive behavior of Rayleigh waves in a layered medium. Monte Carlo inversion yielded a consistent three-layer model across all measurement sites, with first-layer Vs values of 60.78–155.14 m/s, second-layer Vs of 90.85–202.90 m/s, and third-layer Vs of 184.98–398.91 m/s, progressively increasing with depth. Vs30 values across all sites range from 104.15 to 231.74 m/s with a mean of 149.71 m/s. Based on the SNI 1726:2019 classification, 16 sites (80%) are categorized as site class SE (soft soil, Vs30 < 180 m/s) and 4 sites (20%) as site class SD (medium soil, 180–360 m/s), all of which are concentrated within and around the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) campus area. The predominance of site class SE across 80% of the measurement locations reflects the high seismic amplification potential in East Surabaya. These findings are expected to serve as a scientific reference for earthquake-resistant structural design and the formulation of evidence-based seismic disaster mitigation policies in the region.
