Abstract

As part of the family, attention to dog health is one of the priorities of every pet owner. One way to monitor dog health is by checking the heart rate. Heart rate can be checked using certain tools, such as an electrocardiograph (ECG); however, ECG access is limited to medical use in specific cases and involves a fairly expensive cost range. This research designed a wearable device based on an ESP32 microcontroller that can check a dog's heart rate more affordably using a MAX30102 photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor combined with an MPU6050 Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor to detect motion artifacts. Motion artifacts are detected through gyroscope magnitude calculation and adaptive thresholding, then compensated using a hybrid approach: Piecewise Cubic Hermite Interpolating Polynomial (PCHIP) interpolation for short-duration artifacts and beat-template-based reconstruction for long-duration artifacts. Testing was conducted under three movement conditions—stationary, moderate, and fast—using a pulse oximeter as a reference. The results show that the applied compensation method successfully reduced the average BPM error from 0.375 BPM (0.44%) before compensation to 0.122 BPM (0.14%) after compensation, with final error percentages against the oximeter of 1.64% under stationary conditions, 3.40% under moderate movement, and 3.66% under fast movement. Direct testing on a dog subject with an average motion disturbance of 55.41% further proved that the system remains capable of providing stable and accurate heart rate readings, demonstrating that the designed device is effective for use as a canine heart rate monitoring system.
