Abstract

The underutilization of running shoes causes many products to remain unused before reaching the end of their service life, resulting in inefficient resource utilization and potentially increasing environmental impacts. One alternative to address this issue is the Product Service System (PSS), a consumption model that enables a single pair of running shoes to be shared among multiple users, thereby improving product utilization. However, the implementation of this model in Indonesia remains limited due to the lack of quantitative studies comparing its environmental and economic performance with the conventional ownership model. Therefore, this study aims to identify consumer behavior scenarios in running shoe usage and compare the environmental impacts and costs of ownership and PSS models from the consumer's perspective in Jakarta. The analysis was conducted using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) approaches, focusing on the use and maintenance phases. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey involving 273 respondents in Jakarta, supported by observations and interviews with shoe rental and laundry service providers. The results indicate that the PSS model generally achieves lower environmental impacts by improving product utilization efficiency, whereas the ownership model results in lower consumer costs. Furthermore, the environmental and economic performance of both business models is influenced by user behavior, including running intensity, maintenance frequency, consumption preferences, shoe price category, and the type of PSS service selected. This study is expected to provide a basis for consumer decision-making and offer insights for the development of more sustainable business models in the footwear industry
