Abstract

Protection miscoordination occurs when protective relays fail to operate selectively, causing upstream protective devices to trip simultaneously with or earlier than downstream relays. This condition not only reduces power system reliability but also increases the severity of disturbances, including the potential occurrence of arc flash. Arc flash is a phenomenon in which an electric arc is released into the air and flows through conductors between phases or from phase to ground. Arc flash analysis is required to determine the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure the safety of personnel and the surrounding environment from the hazards associated with the thermal energy released during an arc flash event. Protection miscoordination and the high risk of arc flash were identified in an oil and gas exploration company in South Sumatra, where several protective relays exhibited non-selective operation. This study employs the IEEE 1584-2002 standard for arc flash simulation and analysis, the Energy Boundary Curve Method as an additional approach for evaluating the level of arc flash hazard, and the NFPA 70E-2018 standard for determining the appropriate PPE category. System modeling, protection coordination analysis, and arc flash simulations were carried out using ETAP 21.0.1 software. The results of this study are expected to provide recommendations for more selective protection settings and appropriate PPE categories for high-risk areas.
