Abstract

The duplex coating system, combining hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) and epoxy coating, is a premier corrosion protection method for steel structures in aggressive offshore environments. This system provides synergistic protection through the cathodic mechanism of the zinc layer and the barrier effect of the organic coating. However, the performance of a duplex system is critically dependent on the adhesion quality at the galvanized-epoxy interface. This study aims to analyze the effect of HDG immersion time variations (5, 7, and 9 minutes) on the pull-off adhesion strength of a duplex system applied to ASTM A36 carbon steel, following NORSOK M-501 standards. The galvanizing process adhered to ISO 1461, while adhesion performance was evaluated using the pull-off method per ASTM D4541. Supporting parameters, including zinc layer thickness (DFT) and surface profile, were also measured. The results indicate that while increased immersion time leads to higher zinc thickness, the optimal adhesion strength of MPa was achieved at the minute interval. This research provides technical references for optimizing HDG parameters to enhance the reliability of corrosion protection systems in heavy industrial and offshore applications.
