Abstract

The challenge of fossil fuel depletion presents a significant global issue, driving the search for alternative energy sources. Among various green energy options, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) have gained considerable attention due to their high energy conversion efficiency, high power density, low pollutant emissions, and ability to operate at low temperatures. However, PEMFCs often face suboptimal power output due to fluctuations in operating conditions, such as changes in operating temperature and membrane water content. Additionally, to optimize power generation, parasitic losses from power consumption by the compressor must also be minimized through optimal control management between the compressor and PEMFC. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that the oxygen supply received by the PEMFC is neither deficient nor excessive, in order to improve its operational efficiency. As a result, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and maximum efficiency point tracking (MEPT) in PEMFCs are essential.
This study proposes a method for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and maximum efficiency point tracking (MEPT) in PEMFCs using artificial intelligence algorithms and an interleaved buck-boost converter. For power point tracking (MPPT), the Jellyfish Search Algorithm (JSA) is applied to optimize the PEMFC's power generation. The accuracy and performance of the proposed algorithm are evaluated under varying conditions such as membrane water content, temperature, and hydrogen pressure. The overall system, consisting of the PEMFC, interleaved buck-boost converter, and JSA controller, is introduced, modeled, and tested through simulations. Simulation validation shows that the JSA method achieves the highest accuracy of 99.98% under variations in membrane water content and combined temperature, with the fastest completion time of 1.6 seconds in both the membrane water content variation and combined water content and temperature scenarios. A comparative study with other works in the literature further confirms that JSA achieves the highest accuracy. These findings validate the effectiveness of JSA-MPPT in enhancing power extraction from PEMFCs when combined with IBBC, providing high accuracy and fast tracking performance. This research continued with modeling and controlling the compressor and PEMFC to achieve maximum operational efficiency (MEPT). The analysis will focus on improving the output power obtained by increasing the air supply to the PEMFC, as well as its impact on the increased power consumption by the compressor. Net power is calculated as the difference between the output power and the compressor power consumption. This relationship is analyzed under both minimum and maximum load current conditions that may occur during system operation. Two input variables, compressor manifold supply pressure and load current, are fed into the ANFIS model to determine the optimal compressor speed that maximizes net power. Based on the proposed system model and ANFIS control method, the maximum net power of PEMFC was successfully achieved according to the current load conditions, with an accuracy of 99.95%, outperforming other methods.
