Abstract

The rapid growth of non-subsidized fertilizer demand in Riau Province—recorded at 21–23% annually—has been identified as a major market opportunity that has not been fully utilized by CV Bangun Dinata, as reflected in the order fulfillment rate of only 10% in February 2025. In this study, the existing business model of the company is examined and a more relevant and competitive model is designed using the Business Model Canvas (BMC) framework. A qualitative method is employed, in which data are collected through interviews, observations, and internal document analysis to identify value gaps across the nine blocks of the BMC. It is revealed that misalignment in value proposition, ineffective communication channels, weak customer relationship practices, and limitations in key resources and key activities have contributed to the high rate of order cancellations. As a result of this research, a redesigned business model that is more adaptive to the dynamics of the nonsubsidized fertilizer market is proposed, in which value clarity is strengthened, digital integration for ordering and information systems is recommended, and improvements in distribution processes and customer engagement are emphasized. The implications of this study are expected to provide practical benefits for enhancing the operational performance of CV Bangun Dinata and to contribute academically to the development of business model research for fertilizer distributors in Indonesia.
