Abstract

The products resulting from the continuous separation process in sugar production at the Kebon Agung Sugar Mill still contain molasses and have a relatively high moisture content, so they do not meet the criteria for white crystal sugar and have low economic value. The growing interest in brown sugar creates an opportunity to process this product into a higher-value raw material. The objective of this study is to design a process for converting products from the continuous separation process into brown sugar that meets quality standards. The methodology employed includes on-site problem analysis, a literature review, process flow design, and calculations of the mass balance, energy balance, and specifications for the main equipment. The design results show that a process sequence comprising a sugar silo, bucket elevator, fluidized bed dryer, cooling conveyor, ball mill, vibrating screen, and packaging unit can reduce moisture content, standardize particle size, and maintain consistent product quality. The production capacity is designed at 900 metric tons per year or 113.64 kg per hour, with the fluidized bed dryer serving as the primary drying unit. This design demonstrates that using products from continuous separation as raw materials for brown sugar has the potential to increase product value-added, support product diversification, optimize the use of process byproducts, and enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the sugar industry at the Kebon Agung Sugar Mill.
