Abstract

Industrial electrical systems require selective protection coordination to limit the affected area and prevent widespread outages when a fault occurs. In addition to maintaining operational continuity, protection device settings influence the fault-clearing Time and the incident energy generated by an arc flash. This study aims to evaluate protection coordination by considering arc-flash hazards in the electrical system of Plant 1A at PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur using the energy boundary curve method. The electrical system was modelled using ETAP 21.0.1. The analysis included load-flow and short-circuit simulations, protection coordination evaluation for five representative configurations, and arc-flash analysis under the existing and reset protection settings. Protection coordination was evaluated using Time–Current Characteristic (TCC) curves, while the incident energy calculations were performed according to IEEE 1584-2002. The results were then compared with those obtained using the energy boundary curve method to determine the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) category. The results indicate that several protection devices under the existing settings were potentially overlapping, while several upstream devices operated faster than the corresponding downstream devices. After resetting, the protection sequence became more selective, with downstream devices operating as the primary protection and upstream devices functioning as backup protection. The arc-flash analysis based on IEEE 1584-2002 and the energy boundary curve method produced relatively consistent PPE classifications. Buses 1503-2 and 357 were classified as level 0, Buses 391 and 1501-2 were classified as Category 3, and Bus 1501-1 was classified as Category 3. The results of this study can be used as a consideration for protection setting implementation and PPE selection for personnel working in the electrical system of Plant 1A at PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur.
